Chiikawa movie surpasses 10 billion yen at the box office
The animated film ‘Chiikawa: The Secret of Mermaid Island’ has surpassed 10 billion yen in box office revenue within 30 days of its July 24 release. This milestone marks the first feature film for the franchise, which originated from manga by illustrator Nagano on X (formerly Twitter).
The film, which adapts the popular ‘Siren arc’ under the supervision of Nagano, has maintained a commercial pace similar to the ‘Detective Conan: Highway Angel’ film. It is the fourth animated film in 2026 to reach the 10 billion yen mark, following ‘Zootopia 2’, ‘Detective Conan: Highway Angel’, and ‘Toy Story 5’.
Since its debut, the film has seen strong performance across 447 theaters, including IMAX locations. The franchise has gained significant popularity for its blend of cute characters and a more serious, intense world, earning the Grand Prix at the Japan Character Awards.
