Chiikawa the Movie reclaims Japanese box office lead
The animated feature “Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island” has demonstrated significant box office resilience in Japan, reclaiming the top spot in its third weekend of release. The film has surpassed 5 billion yen in total earnings and has seen over 3.5 million viewers since its July 24 debut.
Driven by strong word-of-mouth and a loyal fanbase, the film's success has extended beyond theaters into a frenzy for limited-edition merchandise. Official theater bonuses, including character charms and 3D stickers, have led to sold-out screenings and concerns regarding scalpers and counterfeit items appearing on secondary markets like Mercari.
The popularity has also impacted the food industry, with themed collaborations such as the “Original Island Curry” at CoCo Ichibanya selling out rapidly at various locations in Tokyo. While major international releases like “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” have dominated markets in the US, UK, and China, the Chiikawa franchise continues to maintain a unique and dominant hold on the Japanese cinematic landscape.
