Fire Engulfs Upper Floor of Residential Building in Chișinău

On 22 June 2026 a large fire broke out on the attic level of a residential block at Melestiu 16/2 in Chișinău, Moldova. The blaze quickly spread, prompting the Inspectorate General for Emergency Situations (IGSU) to deploy 76 rescuers and 19 specialised fire trucks. Residents, including children, were evacuated and two people received medical care but remained in stable condition.

Authorities established a command post and escalated the response to an extraordinary level. The IGSU’s experimental fire‑lab later presented two possible causes: an electrical short‑circuit or open‑flame work being carried out on the roof by a contractor hired by the building’s owners’ association. The incident prompted a thorough investigation and continued monitoring to fully extinguish the fire.
