2026 fire incidents and wildfire risk

Entities: Colorado Department of Transportation · Ouray County Sheriff's Office · Bureau of Land Management · Cross Canyon Fire · Dolores County Emergency Management

Overview

June‑July 2026 saw several fire incidents across Europe and the western United States. In Moldova, an attic blaze in Chișinău on 22 June required 76 rescuers; a house fire in Scânteia, Romania the next day was extinguished without injuries, and a ninth‑floor apartment fire in Chișinău was contained. In France, a five‑storey apartment building in Dijon suffered a fatal fire on the night of 4–5 July. The U.S. Forest Service imposed Stage 1 and Stage 2 wildfire‑risk restrictions in Colorado and Nevada, expanding to additional districts by 28 June. NOAA’s seasonal outlook projected an El Niño that could bring above‑average precipitation to western Colorado from July to September, potentially reducing fire danger. Mid‑July, two separate wildfires burned in Routt County, Colorado. Colorado fire restrictions tightened on 22 July, keeping Stage 2 limits on the White River National Forest – the nation’s most visited forest – while officials noted Stage 3 full‑closure would be considered only if compliance or human‑caused ignitions worsen, a level used in Colorado only once (San Juan National Forest, 2018). The Southern Ute Indian Tribe’s Stage 1 restrictions, effective 22 May, continue to ban open burning, agricultural fires, campfires and fireworks. On 22 July Benton County, Washington entered the EXTREME fire‑danger rating, prompting a ban on all outdoor burning after rapid spread of the recent Ryegrass Coulee and Tucannon fires. In Summit County, Colorado the fire‑danger rating fell to VERY HIGH on 23 July after modest moisture gains, but Stage 2 restrictions remain due to dry lodgepole pine and bug‑kill timber. New developments on 24 July saw Clear Creek and Jefferson counties adopt a standardized evacuation system with a distinctive Hi‑Lo siren to signal “Evacuation Warning” and “Evacuation Order” during wildfire threats.
