Peru strengthens social programs to combat childhood anemia

Peru is intensifying efforts to combat childhood anemia through strengthened social programs and international cooperation. The Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion (Midis) is working to bolster community kitchens and common pots to reduce anemia rates, particularly in vulnerable regions.

To support these goals, Midis Minister Maritza Canales met with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) representative in Peru, Mariana Escobar, to coordinate technical assistance and resource mobilization. The partnership focuses on food security and enhancing the School Feeding Program (PAE) to improve nutritional quality for school-aged children.

Despite these initiatives, anemia remains a critical challenge. National data indicates that one in three children aged 6 to 35 months suffers from the condition. Prevalence is significantly higher in rural areas (43.2%) compared to urban areas (31.5%), and reaches as high as 60% in parts of the Amazon. The issue is closely linked to poverty, with the highest rates found in the poorest households due to unequal access to clean water, sanitation, and nutritious food.
