Childhood anemia prevention efforts in Peru

Overview

Efforts to combat childhood anemia in Peru are being addressed through both private-sector partnerships and expanded government social programs.

In Lima, UNICEF and the energy firm Pluz Energía launched a strategic alliance for the San Benito neighborhood in Carabayllo. Running from 2026 to 2028, the program aims to support 650 children under three years old by training community health agents and improving nutrition and hygiene in local communal kitchens.

Concurrently, the Peruvian Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion (Midis) is working with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to bolster food security and the School Feeding Program (PAE). Midis Minister Maritza Canales has met with FAO representative Mariana Escobar to coordinate technical assistance and resource mobilization, specifically focusing on strengthening community kitchens and common pots to improve nutritional quality.

In response to the ongoing crisis, the Ministry of Health (Minsa) and Midis have launched a collaborative strategic action plan. Health Minister Luis Dyer Fernández described the initiative as a ‘plan de guerra’ (war plan), utilizing technical working groups to establish concrete measures and strategic routes. This strategy is intended to eventually expand to include academia, international organizations, and the private sector. The urgency of this plan is underscored by 2025 data from the Demographic and Family Health Survey (ENDES), which reported that 34.9% of children aged 6 to 35 months were affected by anemia.

Despite these initiatives, anemia remains a critical challenge. National data indicates that one in three children aged 6 to 35 months suffers from the condition, with prevalence reaching 43.2% in rural areas and up to 60% in parts of the Amazon.
