Chile: AI regulation debates, child welfare plans, and political updates
Various political and social developments are being reported in Chile. Regarding artificial intelligence, discussions are underway concerning the balance between innovation and security. There is a call for the government to implement a law that includes risk classification and evaluation capabilities, similar to international models, rather than assuming the industry can self-regulate.
In social policy, Undersecretary of Childhood Marcelo Sánchez Ahumada announced the “Chile Cuida a los Niños” plan, a roadmap to 2030 aimed at improving child welfare. The initiative focuses on moving children under four years old from residential care into family environments through the “Crecer en Familia” program. Recent data indicates that 180 children left residences this year, with more children exiting care than entering for the first time in recorded history.
Additionally, members of the UDI party issued a clarification regarding a recent meeting between Pablo Longueira and Pepa Hoffmann during a party anniversary event in Puerto Montt. The party leadership stated that the encounter was peaceful and well-received by attendees, disputing reports of tension during the gathering.
