Chile and Falkland Islands to resume maritime trade route in November
A commercial maritime route between Punta Arenas, Chile, and the Falkland Islands is set to resume in November after a 15-year suspension. The agreement, signed between Easter Island Naviera and the Falkland Islands Development Corporation (FIDC), will utilize the merchant vessel Danstar to transport goods such as frozen foods, beverages, wood, and vehicle parts.
The reactivation is expected to generate approximately $20 million in annual trade for the Magallanes region and reduce maritime travel distance by roughly half compared to current routes via Montevideo. The Mayor of Punta Arenas, Claudio Radonich, estimated that the suspension of this route resulted in cumulative losses of about $300 million.
The development has triggered diplomatic tension. The Argentine government has expressed concern regarding the strategic and commercial implications of the route. Simultaneously, the Chilean Chamber of Deputies passed seven resolutions urging the government of President José Antonio Kast to protect national interests in the southern zone. These resolutions include calls to prioritize Chilean interests over political affinities with the administration of Javier Milei and requests to repeal Argentine Decree 457/2021, which Chilean legislators argue affects their sovereign interests in southern maritime spaces.
