By early August 2026, EIL moved toward negotiating a regular cargo route to transport food, construction materials, spare parts, and industrial supplies to the islands, while returning scrap metal and recyclables to Chile. This initiative, backed by the FIDC and coordinated with Chilean and British chambers of commerce, supports the Sea Lion project’s anticipated production of up to 50,000 barrels per day.

In late September 2026, a business delegation including representatives from the FIDC and the Falkland Islands Chamber of Commerce scheduled a visit to Punta Arenas. The mission will participate in the Punta Arenas Commercial Expo on September 28 and 29 to engage with regional suppliers and port operators. Establishing this route could significantly reduce logistics costs by nearly halving the distance compared to current connections via Montevideo. A first official voyage is projected for November 2026 to transport essential goods, including liquefied gas.

The move has drawn diplomatic scrutiny in Argentina, where officials view such bilateral commercial schemes as a way to “normalize the British presence in the disputed territory.” While the Chilean central government maintains its historical support for Argentine sovereignty claims, these subnational economic efforts in the Magallanes region have sparked internal political debate regarding the potential diplomatic impact on relations with Argentina.
