Chile and Japan seek to deepen economic ties and investment

Chilean Foreign Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna met with high-level executives from major Japanese corporations, including Mitsui, Marubeni, Sumitomo, and NTT, to encourage increased investment in Chile. During the meetings, the minister highlighted the benefits of Chile’s Reconstruction Law, which offers tax reductions, long-term stability, and streamlined permitting for large-scale projects.

Japan remains the largest Asian investor in Chile. Bilateral trade grew by 11 percent in the first half of 2026, totaling over six billion dollars. The economic relationship is supported by the 2007 Strategic Economic Partnership Agreement and the CPTPP. While Japan exports automobiles, semiconductors, and technology, Chile exports copper, molybdenum, salmon, and pork.

Both nations identified significant opportunities for cooperation in the energy transition, decarbonization, and clean energy. Discussions focused on diversifying global supply chains and expanding investment in critical minerals, renewable energy, green hydrogen, agribusiness, and advanced technology.
