Chilean diplomatic mission to Asia
Overview
Chilean Foreign Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna has conducted a diplomatic mission to China, Vietnam, and Japan to strengthen economic ties and prepare for President José Antonio Kast’s upcoming visit to the APEC summit in November.
In China, the minister met with high-ranking officials, including Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Vice Premier He Lifeng, to discuss strategic cooperation and the Belt and Road Initiative. The visit aimed to promote the ‘Choose Chile’ plan to attract investment and expand external sales. During the China leg, Pérez Mackenna and Ambassador Alfonso Silva visited the Port of Shanghai, a critical hub facilitating approximately half of Chile’s shipments to China, including copper, cherries, cellulose, and salmon. The minister noted that the visit reaffirms deep commercial ties, with bilateral trade growing nearly 15% over the last year to reach US$67.1 billion.
In Vietnam, discussions focused on renewable energy, mining, agriculture, and technology. The mission concluded in Japan, where the minister met with executives from major corporations such as Mitsui, Marubeni, Sumitomo, and NTT to encourage increased investment. Highlighting Chile’s Reconstruction Law, which offers tax reductions and streamlined permitting, the minister sought to bolster relations ahead of the 130th anniversary of diplomatic ties in 2027. Both nations identified opportunities for cooperation in the energy transition, decarbonization, and critical minerals, noting that bilateral trade grew by 11 percent in the first half of 2026.
