Chile and Mexico advance political reforms regarding party stability and nationality

In Chile, the government has granted ‘suma urgencia’ (extreme urgency) to a political system reform aimed at improving governance and representativeness. The proposal, introduced during Gabriel Boric’s administration, seeks to reduce political fragmentation and strengthen parties. Key provisions include a requirement for parties to condemn totalitarianism and the use of violence, as well as a minimum affiliation threshold of 0.3% of the electorate for new parties. While some legislators support the move to restore stability, others criticize the agreement between major parties as being negotiated behind closed doors.

In Mexico, President Claudia Sheinbaum has proposed a reform requiring individuals aspiring to the presidency or a governorship to renounce any other nationalities. Sheinbaum stated that while foreign nationals are welcome to become Mexican citizens and participate in political discourse, those seeking high executive office must hold only Mexican nationality to avoid conflicts of interest and protect national sovereignty. The initiative is currently being analyzed by Senate commissions.
