The initiative has since passed a commission in the Chamber of Deputies, with the Constitutional Points Commission specifically approving the proposal to ensure that those in high office maintain an ‘undivided commitment to Mexico.’ While supported by the Morena coalition, the reform faces potential legislative hurdles in the Senate due to varying stances and internal divisions within the Green Party (PVEM). Recent developments confirm that the reform, which could apply starting in 2028, mandates that candidates must prove their foreign citizenship has been formally revoked by the respective foreign government before registration.
