Chile and Peru move to restore consular services in Venezuela

Several South American nations are moving to restore consular services in Venezuela following a period of severed diplomatic ties.

Chilean Foreign Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna announced that the country has formalized consular relations and deployed a team to Caracas. The Chilean government expects its consulate in Caracas and Puerto Ordaz to be fully operational within August. These offices had been closed since January 31, 2025, after the Venezuelan administration suspended their functions following Chile's criticism of the July 2024 Venezuelan presidential elections.

Similarly, Peru has begun a progressive process to resume bilateral relations with Venezuela. The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has appointed Alicia María Espinoza Paredes as the new consul general in Caracas. This appointment serves as an initial step toward restoring full diplomatic ties, which were broken in July 2024 due to concerns regarding electoral irregularities in Venezuela.
