Chile and Peru tackle gender violence with new support programs and rising femicide cases
In Tocopilla, Chile, the Provincial Presidential Delegation took over three gender‑based violence programs from the municipal government, ensuring continued legal, psychological and reparatory assistance for women. Deputy Provincial Delegate Daniela Vecchiola Riquelme announced the transition, noting that 200 gender‑violence cases were recorded in 2025 and 105 in the first quarter of 2026, while the Subsecretariat of Crime Prevention reported 275 complaints last year and 91 so far this year.
In Peru’s Puno region, three femicide cases have been recorded this year, occurring in Azángaro, Nuñoa and Juli. Coordinators of the Warmi Ñan program highlighted the need for immediate reporting and emphasized that the victims’ families are receiving psychological support through the 24‑hour Line 100 and local Women’s Emergency Centers. The cases have left two minors orphaned and have prompted calls for stronger institutional response.
