Chile and Venezuela advance forest conservation with tree planting and fire reductions

In Viña del Mar, Chile's National Forest Corporation (CONAF) marked National Forest Engineer Day on May 3 by handing out 200 native trees—peumo, quillay, quebracho and maitén—to passers‑by, together with educational material on urban arborisation and forest‑fire prevention. Regional director Sandro Bruzzone stressed the holistic role of forest engineers in managing ecosystems, soils and water.

CONAF also celebrated the day in San Antonio, delivering 50 native trees of species such as molle, huingán, peumo and quebracho, accompanied by guidance on urban greening and fire‑risk mitigation.

In Venezuela, the Ministry of Ecosocialism announced a 25 % decline in forest fires for the current dry season compared with the previous period, a message conveyed by Minister Alfred Nazaret Ñáñez on International Forest Firefighter Day.
