Mexico forest protection enforcement intensifies

Entities: Federal Prosecutor for Environmental Protection (Profepa) · Durango · La Yerbabuena · Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat)

Overview

In late June 2026 Mexican authorities stepped up forest‑protection measures while civil‑society groups kept pressure on illegal activities. A monitoring pact in Nuevo León, timber seizures in Michoacán, and a 300‑person police‑army deployment in Ocoyoacac were complemented by Probosque’s forest‑health operation, which issued 98 sanitation notifications and performed 225 phytosanitary diagnostics across 814 ha. Urban‑forest activism also advanced, with the Movimiento Salvemos al Parque de la Juventud securing a green‑area brigade in Tlaxcala and Biofutura warning of ecocide in Hidalgo’s Centro Minero. A second joint national inspection by PROFEPA and CONANP (15‑20 June) covered 33 priority protected areas, closing 33 illegal activities. On 8 July, PROFEPA sealed an unauthorized charcoal plant in Metepec after a citizen complaint. The enforcement drive continued on 7 July when the State Forestry Corps destroyed nine illegal charcoal ovens near Parque Nacional Malinche, seized timber and 60 kg of charcoal, and forwarded citizen reports of unauthorized logging in the Zona Media to Profepa. Local ejidatarios are pressing for new protected‑area designations. On 8 July Profepa ordered temporary closures of illegal operations in two protected zones: it sealed vegetation‑removal and unpermitted road works in Peña Colorada, Querétaro, and halted an illegal feldspar mine in Zacatlán, Puebla, deploying state forest police and Navy personnel. The agency pledged ongoing monitoring, community consultations and heightened patrols to safeguard the affected ecosystems. On 16 July the Rural Development Secretariat (SDR) and the National Forestry Commission (Conafor) held a Forest Health Workshop at the State Fire Management Center, training 60 participants—including forest‑service providers and agency staff—on bark‑beetle regulations, safe agrochemical handling and PPE. The program strengthens a joint agreement to standardize technical criteria and improve response to forest‑health threats.
