Chile and Venezuela restore consular relations
On 30 July 2026 Chilean President José Antonio Kast announced the reactivation of consular relations with Venezuela, marking the first step toward normalising bilateral ties that were broken in July 2024 after Chile questioned the transparency of Venezuela’s elections. The agreement was signed by Chile’s foreign minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna together with Venezuela’s interim president Delcy Rodríguez and includes a roadmap for progressive normalisation. It aims to address shared security, migration and economic‑development challenges and will restore consular services for roughly 700 000 Venezuelans living in Chile and about 25 000 Chileans in Venezuela. The governments described the move as the start of a “new stage” in the relationship and emphasized that it is driven by practical needs rather than broader migration policy.
