Chile declares state of catastrophe in Tocopilla amid severe weather
Severe weather caused by a frontal system is impacting northern Chile, prompting emergency declarations and evacuations. In the Antofagasta Region, Senapred has issued a Red Alert for the entire region due to the risk of intense precipitation, landslides, and high winds reaching up to 100 km/h.
In the province of Tocopilla, President José Antonio Kast has declared a constitutional state of exception of catastrophe to facilitate the deployment of human and material resources. The Meteorological Directorate of Chile has issued alarms for intense rainfall in the coastal areas of Tocopilla and Taltal, noting a very high probability of mass movements.
In Iquique, within the Tarapacá Region, Senapred activated SAE emergency messaging to order evacuations in the Zofri, Barrio Industrial, and Marinero Desconocido sectors. Reports indicate that landslides have already caused vehicles to fall in the Zofri area, raising concerns about further sediment and water movement.
