Chile Deploys New Gendarmerie Contingent to Boost Prison Security
In the Maule region, 32 newly graduated gendarmes were welcomed by regional officials to reinforce security at the new Talca Penitentiary Complex, the most modern prison facility in South America. The ceremony was attended by the presidential delegate, the regional gendarmerie director, and secretaries of public security and justice, who highlighted the contingent's training in human‑rights‑focused prison procedures.
Separately, Gendarmería carried out a registration and search operation at the Punta Arenas penitentiary in Magallanes. Led by the regional justice secretary and the prison director, the raid involved special services, trained dogs and other staff, seizing contraband such as drugs, communication devices and weapons, and emphasizing strict adherence to human‑rights standards.
