Argentina Senate salaries rise to nearly 12 million pesos per month
Starting in August, Argentine senators will receive a gross monthly salary of about 11.877 million pesos, up from roughly 10.7 million pesos. The increase results from the latest tranche of a legislative parity agreement negotiated by Senate president Victoria Villarruel and Deputy House leader Martín Menem with the congressional unions (APL, UPCN, ATE). The adjustment is cumulative 6.7 % and is applied in three steps: a 2.4 % retroactive increase for June, 2.2 % for July and 1.9 % for August.
The raise is linked to the “law of linkage” that ties senatorial pay to the salary modules of congressional workers, setting the salary at 2,500 modules plus additional allowances for representation and desarraigo. The net effect is a total increase of about 1.2 million pesos between January and August, outpacing the 16.8 % inflation recorded in the first half of the year. Deputies, whose pay is not subject to the linkage, continue to earn a gross salary of 6.072 million pesos, highlighting a widening disparity between the two chambers. Senators may choose to renounce or donate the increase, as some have done.
