Chile ends migration flexibilities for Venezuelan citizens

Chile's National Migration Service (SERMIG) has revoked Circular No. 10 of 2024, which previously provided administrative flexibilities for Venezuelan citizens residing in the country. The decision, formalized through Exempt Resolution No. 15.106 and signed by director Frank Sauerbaum, took effect on August 19.

The measure follows the restoration of consular relations between Chile and Venezuela, ending the exceptional circumstances that necessitated the original circular. The revoked regulations allowed Venezuelans to use expired passports or identity cards if renewal was in progress, facilitated travel with expired documents, and offered extended deadlines for submitting criminal or birth certificates.

While the new administrative act immediately repeals these benefits, it does not include transitional provisions for applications currently in process under the previous regime.
