Chile experiences extreme frost with temperatures down to -5°C

A polar air mass settled over central Chile in early July, bringing intense frost and sub‑zero temperatures. Experts from the University of Talca reported minima as low as -5.3 °C in Santa Sofía (Cauquenes) and -5 °C in peripheral districts of Santiago such as Pudahuel and Maipú, while the city centre saw lows near -1 °C. The cold front is expected to persist through early next week, with light rain possible in the Maule region.

The prolonged freezes, lasting up to ten hours overnight, raise concerns for agriculture and could increase frost damage to crops. Meteorologists said residual moisture from Saturday’s rain may enhance frost formation on Sunday morning. Authorities continue to issue agrometeorological warnings, advising early‑morning travelers and outdoor workers to monitor updates.
