Chile weather emergencies, floods, and mining response

Entities: Jaime Leyton · Juan Pablo Mellado · Cabrero · Santiago Metropolitan Region · Frontel

Overview

In early July 2024 a strong frontal system swept central‑southern Chile, delivering heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds across Maule, Ñuble, Biobío, Araucanía, Los Ríos and Los Lagos. More than 56 homes were damaged, about 18,000 households lost electricity, rivers overflowed, landslides blocked roads and closed ports and the Cardenal Samoré border crossing. Emergency shelters opened, schools were monitored and the Carabineros warned drivers to exercise extreme caution. The Meteorological Directorate renewed rain alerts, the Presidential Delegation declared an environmental alert in Santiago, and a virtual meeting on 13 July gathered mining companies, Sernageomin and the National Disaster Prevention and Response Service to activate contingency plans. On 17 July 2026 a similar frontal system caused severe flooding in Arauco province (Bío Bío region), inundating over 70 houses and prompting the cancellation of the TV programme “Primer Plano.” Union groups FENATS Nacional and FEDEPRUS Base Aconcagua criticised the Aconcagua Health Service on 21 July for lacking a contingency plan as intense rains and winds flooded hospital access points. The Labour Directorate warned employers to protect workers where essential services such as potable water were disrupted, ordered inspections and kept an open channel for complaints. Later on 21 July 2026 the same system forced the suspension of many mining activities in Biobío, Coquimbo and Atacama. More than 1,000 workers were isolated at remote cordilleran sites; Los Pelambres activated evacuation shelters, supplied food, heating and emergency kits, and continued operating its mine, plant, Tranque El Mauro and port despite damaged access roads and power supplies. A rural worker died after being swept away by the swollen Copiapó River, and health services again faced criticism for lacking clear contingency plans.
