Seismic activity reported in Chile and Peru
Multiple seismic events were recorded in South America on October 9 and 11, 2026. In Chile, a magnitude 5.2 earthquake occurred near Colchane in the Tarapacá Region at a depth of approximately 127 kilometers.
In Peru, two significant tremors struck the southern coast on Sunday, October 11. A magnitude 5.1 earthquake occurred at 8:43 a.m. local time with its epicenter near Quilca in the Camaná province of Arequipa. This was preceded by a magnitude 4.5 earthquake in the Ica region near San Juan de Marcona.
Authorities, including Peru’s National Emergency Operations Center (COEN), reported that the shaking was perceived as light to moderate and ruled out any risk of a tsunami. No casualties or significant structural damage have been reported from these specific events. Both countries remain highly active seismically due to their location along the Ring of Fire and the interaction of the Nazca and South American tectonic plates.
