Chile Government Launches Interministerial Employment Initiative Aiming 50,000 Jobs

Chile’s government has created the Interministerial Employment Table (Mesa Interministerial por el Empleo) to confront an unemployment crisis affecting more than 940,000 people. Ministers of Economy, Women’s Equality, Labor and Regional Development pledged to generate 50,000 new jobs within four months, with particular focus on women (unemployment 10.5%) and youth aged 15‑25 (unemployment 22.8%). Weekly coordination meetings will involve regional and municipal authorities to target areas with the highest joblessness, such as Valparaíso, Biobío and the Metropolitan region.

In the commune of Renca, the municipal mayor, the Confederation of Production and Commerce (CPC) and the Ministry of Labor held a “Desafíos x Renca” forum to forge a local employment alliance. Participants outlined four concrete challenges: expand internship slots for technical‑professional students, boost female participation in traditionally male sectors, prioritize hiring of local workers, and strengthen training aligned with company needs. The initiative responds to a national unemployment rate of 9.1%, the highest in five years, and seeks to translate Renca’s economic growth into tangible jobs and skills for residents.
