Chile employment and economic outlook updates
Overview
Chile’s labor market and broader economy are navigating a period of transition marked by short-term challenges and cautious optimism. While previous data showed rising unemployment and regional disparities, recent economic reports indicate a projected slowdown, with growth expected to be less than 1% this year due to declining fixed investment and a weakened labor market influenced by high hiring costs and technological substitution.
Despite this immediate slowdown, medium-term projections suggest an improved outlook. Fixed investment growth expectations have been raised to 8.1% for next year and 7.1% for 2028, supported by the Reconstruction Law. While inflation may temporarily exceed 4.3% in December, it is expected to converge toward target levels in the coming year.
Regarding employment specifically, the ManpowerGroup Employment Expectations Survey (MEOS) reports a 15% Net Employment Index (NEO) for the final quarter of 2026. This marks a three-percentage-point increase from the third quarter of 2026, though it remains lower than levels seen in 2025. Jorge Gamero, regional director for ManpowerGroup Chile-Peru, noted that while companies are “gradually regaining their willingness to hire,” the primary challenge is sustaining this optimism and extending it across industries to foster formal employment.
