Chile government proposes new data usage clause in 2027 Budget
The Chilean government has introduced a new clause in the 2027 Budget Law project aimed at intensifying the use of personal data for fiscal oversight. This measure is included in 27 of the 33 budget items, covering key ministries such as Health, Education, Housing, Labor and Social Development, Justice, and Public Security.
The primary objective is to allow state institutions to cross-reference information to verify that applicants for state benefits meet all requirements and to detect irregularities in the allocation of public resources. Under the new provision, individuals applying for state-funded benefits will be considered to have authorized the processing of all their personal data by state administration agencies.
This clause applies to both successful recipients and those who merely apply for benefits. While the initiative seeks to leverage existing data across various public institutions, the government noted that legal restrictions regarding personal data remain in effect and access is not unrestricted.
