Chilean delegation attends SCAR Antarctic science conference in Oslo
Chile participated in the 12th SCAR Open Science Conference held in Oslo, Norway, from August 8 to 14, 2026. Under the theme ‘Diving into Antarctic Science: Making Waves for the Future’, the event gathered hundreds of international scientists and policymakers to discuss Antarctic conservation and the impacts of the climate crisis.
A Chilean delegation, led by Dr. Gino Casassa Rogazinski, director of the Chilean Antarctic Institute (INACh), emphasized the link between scientific research and national sovereignty. Dr. Casassa, a glaciologist and contributor to the IPCC, highlighted the urgency of studying the continent as it warms rapidly.
The delegation included representatives from various institutions, such as the Milenio BASE Institute, the University of Magallanes, and the Universidad Autónoma, covering natural sciences, social sciences, and Antarctic governance.
