Chilean Antarctic and marine scientific research

Chilean scientific institutions have demonstrated active engagement in Antarctic and marine research through international and regional forums.

During the 12th SCAR Open Science Conference in Oslo, a Chilean delegation led by the Chilean Antarctic Institute (INACh) addressed Antarctic conservation and the climate crisis. Dr. Gino Casassa Rogazinski, director of INACh, emphasized the connection between scientific research and national sovereignty. Subsequent reports noted the significant scale of Chilean participation at the conference, with 127 documents in the abstract book carrying Chilean affiliations, including 66 featuring Chilean first authors.

In addition to polar research, Chilean scientists participated in the 2026 Annual Meeting of the Center for Research on Marine Ecosystems of Oceanic Islands (ESMOI) in La Serena. This research focused on Southeast Pacific ocean connectivity, the structure of the Nazca and Salas y Gómez seamounts, and the effects of climate change on marine habitats in Rapa Nui and the Juan Fernández Archipelago.
