Chile honors fallen Carabineros on Martyr Day

On 12 June, regional authorities of President José Antonio Kast’s government held solemn ceremonies across Chile to mark the Day of the Martyr of Carabineros. The observance, established in 2022 to honour Vice‑Sargento 1° Guillermo Aguilera Pastene, the first police martyr killed in 1927, paid tribute to more than 1,200 Carabineros who have died in the line of duty. Participants included state officials, local leaders, members of security forces, families of the fallen and civil‑society groups. Government representatives Rosario Pérez and Security Minister Hernán Silva expressed deep respect for the officers and their families, stressing the nation’s duty to care for those who protect it.

During the same day, a police operation in Valparaíso resulted in the arrest of a suspect in a frustrated femicide case; the suspect also struck a carabineros officer with a vehicle. Presidential delegate Manuel Millones announced that the Ministry of Security would file a criminal complaint for attempted homicide, underscoring the government’s commitment to protect its police personnel.
