Chile issues heat alerts from Arica to Magallanes
The National Service for Prevention and Response to Disasters (Senapred) has issued a National Early Preventive Alert for heat across Chile, spanning from the Arica and Parinacota region to Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica. The alert is effective from November 1, 2026, through March 31, 2027, in response to forecasts of temperatures exceeding normal levels and a decade-long trend of increasing extreme heat events.
Additionally, Senapred has declared a Yellow Alert specifically for the Coquimbo Region due to extreme temperature forecasts. In Coquimbo, temperatures in the coastal range are expected to reach between 31 and 33 degrees Celsius, while the precordillera and valleys may see temperatures between 33 and 35 degrees Celsius. This level of alert implies the staggered preparation of resources to mitigate negative impacts on people, property, and the environment.
Health experts, including Dr. María Verónica Morales from the Universidad del Alba, have warned that high temperatures can lead to serious health issues such as dehydration, exhaustion, and heatstroke. Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic illnesses or disabilities, are advised to take extra precautions.
