Weather and geological alerts in Chile
Overview
Chilean authorities have issued multiple warnings regarding environmental instability. Senapred, the National Service for Disaster Prevention and Response, declared a national preventive early warning for extreme heat effective from November 1, 2026, through March 31, 2027. This alert spans the entire country, from the Arica and Parinacota region to Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica, in response to forecasts of temperatures exceeding normal levels and a decade-long trend of increasing extreme heat events.
In the Coquimbo Region, Senapred has declared a specific Yellow Alert due to extreme temperature forecasts. In this area, temperatures in the coastal range are expected to reach between 31 and 33 degrees Celsius, while the precordillera and valleys may see temperatures between 33 and 35 degrees Celsius. This alert level implies the staggered preparation of resources to mitigate impacts on people, property, and the environment. Health experts, including Dr. María Verónica Morales from the Universidad del Alba, have warned that high temperatures can lead to serious health issues such as dehydration, exhaustion, and heatstroke, particularly for vulnerable groups.
Alongside heat concerns, meteorological instability is expected to bring thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds, including potential sandstorms and waterspouts in specific regions. In a separate geological development, the National Geology and Mining Service (SERNAGEOMIN) issued a yellow alert for the Nevados de Chillán Volcanic Complex following two explosions involving pyroclastic material on October 27, 2026. Local authorities have maintained a preventive alert for the towns of Pinto and Coihueco.
