Chile labor market shows national recovery amid regional unemployment concerns

Chile is experiencing divergent labor market trends between national recovery efforts and regional challenges. Nationally, authorities report a recovery in employment following the pandemic, with officials noting that approximately 77.5% of jobs lost during the worst period of COVID-19 have been recovered. Labor Minister Patricio Melero and Economy Minister Lucas Palacios have credited government economic and health measures for this trend, which includes significant job growth in construction, commerce, and the hospitality sectors.

In contrast, the La Araucanía region faces significant economic strain. According to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), regional unemployment reached 10.1% for the April-June 2026 quarter, with 48,505 people unemployed. The region is struggling with a 35.9% informality rate and contractions in both the commercial and manufacturing sectors.

The Central Unitaria de Trabajadores (CUT) Provincial Cautín has criticized current government interventions, such as hiring subsidies, as temporary “patch” measures. CUT President Elsa Almonacid Altamirano argued that these incentives do not guarantee long-term stability or decent work, calling instead for permanent solutions that ensure formal employment and social protection.
