Chile launches 63rd Antarctic Scientific Expedition
Chile has inaugurated its 63rd Antarctic Scientific Expedition (ECA 63), scheduled to run from November through March. Coordinated by the Chilean Antarctic Institute (INACH), the mission involves more than 150 researchers conducting nearly 50 scientific projects.
Research areas include climate change, biodiversity, pollution, Antarctic ecosystems, and human activity. The expedition will utilize several facilities, including the Professor Julio Escudero, Capitán Arturo Prat, and General Bernardo O’Higgins bases. Notable operations include pathogen surveillance using PCR technology and the installation of a new meteorological station atop Mount Vinson to transmit real-time environmental data via satellite.
Logistical support will be provided by the icebreaker Almirante Viel, which will conduct oceanographic research in the Weddell Sea and the southern Antarctic Peninsula. The expedition also aims to strengthen Punta Arenas as a primary international gateway to Antarctica, a role that has seen the number of participating nations grow from 12 to 21 since 2004.
