Antarctic scientific research expeditions

Overview

Multiple international scientific expeditions have launched or commenced operations in Antarctica to conduct research on climate change, ecosystems, and environmental factors.

In mid-October, the 45th Brazilian Antarctic Operation began with the departure of two vessels from Rio de Janeiro, involving over 200 personnel and 29 research projects. This mission includes studies on how the Antarctic environment affects the psychophysiological parameters of crew members. Concurrently, a Spanish-led expedition, Wind Sled Antarctica 2026-2027, began a plan to traverse 3,400 kilometers using wind-powered sleds and solar energy to conduct 16 investigations into ice and polar ecosystems.

By late October, Chile inaugurated its 63rd Antarctic Scientific Expedition, coordinated by the Chilean Antarctic Institute. This mission involves more than 150 researchers working on nearly 50 projects, including pathogen surveillance and the installation of a new meteorological station on Mount Vinson. The expedition utilizes several bases and the icebreaker Almirante Viel to conduct oceanographic research in the Weddell Sea and the southern Antarctic Peninsula.
