Chile launches restoration plans for O'Higgins' Nilahue landscape and Patagonia's ñandú habitat

The O'Higgins regional government, led by Environment Secretary José Pablo Lagos, began drafting a ten‑year Local Restoration Plan for the Secano Costero Nilahue landscape. The plan targets more than 20,000 hectares across six communes, aiming to recover ecosystems threatened by water scarcity and climate change through community workshops and coordinated actions.

Separately, Rewilding Chile, in partnership with CONAF, opened applications for a 2026 volunteer program in Aysén’s Patagonia. Volunteers will spend ten days restoring the habitat of the native ñandú, removing invasive species such as pine and cicuta, and supporting broader conservation efforts in the region's national park.

Both initiatives are part of Chile’s broader effort to protect vulnerable ecosystems, engage local communities, and address the impacts of climate change.
