Chile ecosystem restoration and wildlife protection

In late July 2026 Chile’s regional government began drafting a ten‑year Local Restoration Plan for the Secano Costero Nilahue landscape, targeting over 20,000 ha across six communes to counter water scarcity and climate change. At the same time, Rewilding Chile opened a volunteer program in Patagonia to restore native ñandú habitat by removing invasive species.

A few days later, on International Huemul Day, Chile inaugurated a Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center in the Huilo Huilo Biological Reserve and tested drone‑based thermal monitoring to locate the endangered huemul in remote Andean forests. The new center, funded by a public‑private partnership, and the drone trials illustrate a shift toward species‑specific rescue and high‑tech surveillance, complementing earlier landscape‑level restoration efforts.
