Chile mining sector confronts environmental and social challenges

A review led by University of Chile researcher Fernanda Espínola warns that deep‑sea mining, proposed as a source of critical minerals for batteries and clean‑energy technologies, faces major scientific, regulatory and socio‑economic uncertainties. The study outlines potential impacts on biodiversity, acoustic and light pollution, sediment disturbance and toxin release, urging caution before commercial exploitation.

Meanwhile, Codelco’s El Teniente division showcased its circular‑economy initiatives to a regional environment official. The mine’s waste‑management centre demonstrated compliance with Chile’s Extended Producer Responsibility law, valorising scrap metal, wood, plastics, textiles, tires and hazardous waste. A pilot project produced pavement material using recycled aggregate and rubber, highlighting efforts to extend the life of mining residues and reduce environmental impact.
