Chile projects rare earth mineral development in central-south regions
Chilean mining authorities are projecting the development of rare earth mineral extraction in the Biobío, Ñuble, and Maule regions. Officials highlighted the area's geological and infrastructural capacity to support industries such as renewable energy, advanced electronics, and electromobility. One proposed project in Penco aims to produce concentrates, with a potential $130 million investment expected to create up to 1,400 direct and indirect jobs during regular operations.
While such mineral discoveries offer strategic potential, technical and geopolitical challenges remain regarding the global supply chain. Although many regions possess raw mineral reserves, the industrial capacity to refine and chemically process these materials is highly concentrated. Currently, China controls over 70% of global lithium refining capacity and more than 90% of rare earth chemical processing. This structural imbalance creates a significant bottleneck for the European automotive industry and the broader transition to electric vehicles, as raw extraction is only the first step in a complex value chain.
