Chile strengthens legal oversight for Antarctic mission and Tierra del Fuego laws

On July 30, Chilean prosecutors trained the personnel slated for the 2026‑2027 Antarctic Campaign in Santiago. Led by regional prosecutor Cristián Crisosto, the session explained the role of the Public Ministry, criminal procedures applicable in the Antarctic territory, and channels for reporting offences. It also covered protection protocols for military staff, scientists and other workers operating in the remote bases, under coordination of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Joint Chiefs.

The Regional Council of Magallanes (CORE) has launched a review of the Navarino and Tierra del Fuego exception laws. Councilor Rodolfo Cárdenas said a special commission will gather input from public agencies, businesses and producers to assess the laws' performance and propose modernisation. The review aims to streamline tax benefits, decentralise administrative processes, and support infrastructure, tourism, agriculture and livestock development in the southern territories.
