Antarctic legal and sovereignty issues

Argentina, Chile and the United Kingdom each highlighted their symbolic claims—through births at research stations, settlement communities and postage stamps—while increasing their polar presence. The United Kingdom announced its largest scientific‑infrastructure investment in decades, Chile positioned Punta Arenas as a gateway, and Argentina faced a budget crisis for its historic Orcadas station. The discussion shifted toward whether the treaty’s peace‑and‑science framework can evolve into effective stewardship as the deadline nears.
