Chile warns of frozen water meters and forest fire risk as polar cold wave hits

Suralis, the water utility serving Chile's Los Ríos and Los Lagos regions, urged households to protect potable‑water meters ahead of an expected sub‑zero temperature spell. The company recalled the June 2025 polar wave that destroyed about 9,000 meters and detailed how to insulate meters with cardboard, polyethylene or polystyrene, avoid hot water for thawing, and call its 600 401 4000 hotline. After the July 1 freeze, Suralis reported eight damaged meters in Paillaco, Purranque, Fresia, Llanquihue, Calbuco and Puerto Montt.

The National Forestry Corporation (CONAF) similarly called on residents of Ñuble, Biobío and La Araucanía to refrain from any open flames during an unusually windy winter. Director‑executive Aída Baldini highlighted that strong winds can spark forest fires even in cold weather, and announced coordinated operations with fire services and private firms for prevention, detection and response. The agency emphasized the emergency numbers 130 (CONAF) and 132 (Bomberos) for reporting any fire‑related risks.
