Chile wine consumption falls 17.5% amid market adjustment

Chilean wine consumption fell by 17.5% in 2025, reaching 1.56 million hectoliters. This decline significantly exceeds the global consumption drop of 2.7%. Over the last decade, the local market has shrunk by 39.5%, down from 2.58 million hectoliters.

This domestic downturn occurs alongside challenges in the export sector, which is vital for the country. Between January and November 2025, Chile exported 686 million liters, representing approximately 82% of its total production.

Agriculture Minister Jaime Campos described the situation as an “important adjustment process,” noting that the sector typically manages production variations between 10% and 15% before facing major crises. However, industry experts suggest the issue stems from long-term expansion; the industry increased its surface area to nearly 140,000 hectares based on previous growth expectations that have not materialized.

While Chile remains a significant global producer with a unique viticultural history—including the preservation of pre-phylloxera vines due to its geographic isolation—the industry now faces a period of necessary adaptation to changing market realities.
