Chilean authorities consolidate 2027 huemul conservation strategy

Regional teams from the National Forest Corporation (Conaf) and the Biodiversity and Protected Areas Service (SBAP) in Ñuble met to strengthen preservation and monitoring measures for the huemul, a protected and endemic species in Chile.

The meeting focused on reviewing 2026 goals, updating governance regulations, and designing the strategic planning projected for 2027. Conaf Director for Ñuble, Domingo González Zúñiga, noted that the RECOGE Huemul Plan represents a historical commitment to protecting mountain biodiversity.

SBAP Ñuble acting director, Nicolás Gatica Cárdenas, emphasized that strategic planning for 2027 provides technical structure for safeguarding the species and strengthening the administration of protected areas as core conservation zones.
