Chilean biodiversity and protected area management
Overview
Chile is transitioning its environmental management from the National Forestry Corporation (CONAF) to the new Biodiversity and Protected Areas Service (SBAP). To ensure continuity during this administrative handover, authorities in the Los Ríos Region have presented a Regional Operational Continuity Plan to address potential gaps in personnel and infrastructure before March 2027.
In the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica Region, a Management Council for Kawésqar National Park has been established, involving 16 Kawésqar communities to recognize ancestral ties to the 2.8 million hectare territory.
In the Ñuble Region, officials from both CONAF and SBAP are coordinating conservation strategies for the endemic huemul species. These efforts include reviewing previous goals and designing strategic planning for 2027 to strengthen the administration of protected areas as core conservation zones.
