Chilean budget discussions focus on child protection and literacy

In Chile, upcoming budget discussions are highlighting critical needs in social services and education. Regarding the 2027 budget, concerns have been raised about the proposed funding for the Specialized Protection Service. While the overall service budget is projected to grow by 6.1%, allocations for foster families and residential care are expected to decrease by nearly $22 billion CLP. Critics argue this reduction is based on flawed assumptions regarding low execution rates and projected decreases in residential care needs, noting that residential facilities currently operate with a 31% deficit.

Simultaneously, efforts are underway to address literacy challenges through the National Commitment to Reading Learning. With three out of five children currently failing to read on time, the government aims to ensure all children can comprehend what they read by the end of second grade by 2030. Proposed strategies include prioritizing early childhood education, strengthening measurement initiatives like 'Impulso Lector', and improving teacher training in effective literacy methodologies.
