Chilean Carabineros dismiss officer after colleague's death in Maipú

The Chilean police force, Carabineros, has dismissed an officer following the death of a colleague at the 25th Police Station in Maipú, Santiago. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, November 1, when two officers on leave were reportedly handling a firearm in a dormitory.

A shot was allegedly discharged accidentally during the handling of the weapon, striking a third officer, Bastián Pino, who was present in the room. Pino, a native of Santa Cruz with three years of service, was rushed to Hospital El Carmen, where he later died despite medical efforts.

General Director Marcelo Araya confirmed the dismissal of the officer involved and stated that the institution is providing support to the victim's family. A military prosecutor is leading the judicial investigation to clarify the circumstances, while an administrative summary has been opened to determine disciplinary responsibilities.
