Violence and fatal incidents in Santiago

Overview

Authorities in Santiago, Chile, have responded to multiple fatal incidents involving both criminal activity and police operations.

In late October, police launched investigations into two separate shootings. In Estación Central, a man was killed by gunmen in a moving vehicle, an attack investigators suggest may be linked to criminal organizations. In the Sierra Bella sector of Santiago Centro, a shooting involving two Venezuelan citizens resulted in one death and left another person in serious condition.

By early November, a separate fatal incident occurred within the Carabineros police force in Maipú. An officer was dismissed after a colleague, Bastián Pino, died from a gunshot wound sustained in a dormitory. The incident was reportedly an accidental discharge while officers were handling a firearm. A military prosecutor is investigating the circumstances of the death.
