Chile Contraloría finds 485 suspended officials receiving salaries
The Contraloría General de la República has identified 485 public officials in Chile's central administration who remained on full salary while under preventive suspension during administrative investigations between 2020 and early 2026.
Among these, 30 officials have been suspended for more than three years, with 13 exceeding four years. In the ten most prolonged cases alone, the State disbursed approximately $671 million in remunerations. Notable instances include a staff member at the National Service for Specialized Protection of Children and Adolescents (Mejor Niñez) suspended for over four years, and officials at the Local Public Education Services (SLEP) of Santiago Centro, Atacama, and Santa Corina.
In response, the Contraloría has decided to directly take over the processing of the 30 most delayed summaries to ensure resolution and determine potential responsibilities. Additionally, institutions with officials suspended for over a year must report on the status of these procedures within 15 business days.
